Every Dashboard Light in Your Nissan Sentra
Today's cars are sophisticated. While Nissan designs its vehicles to be user-friendly, there's a lot going on under the hood. Your Nissan Sentra is an investment, one you want to protect and maintain so it will serve you for years to come. And it will if you take care of it. Knowing what your car is telling you will help you do just that. Your Sentra's language is dashboard lights. Understanding what each one means is essential.
This post is your Rosetta Stone for your Nissan Sentra, so bookmark it, pin it, or save it. It'll come in handy.
Dashboard lights come in two flavors – warning (red or yellow) and indicator (green or blue). The color of the light is the first message from your Sentra.
Red, as you might expect, means a potentially serious, even dangerous, problem that you need to address as soon as possible. You'll want to get your Sentra to a certified expert like the ones at Coulter Nissan's Service Center.
Yellow signifies a relatively minor issue that requires action on your part, but not necessarily a trip to the shop. You can keep driving, but don't ignore the warning for too long. Like every gas-powered car on the road, a Sentra that's on fumes will eventually stop if you don't fill 'er up. Green, blue, or white lights are little nudges from your Sentra. They tell you whether a particular system is active and remind you to disengage it if it's not needed. Pro tip: If you have your 2025 Nissan Sentra owner's manual handy, section 3 covers all warning and indicator lights. If you don't have a copy, you can download the Nissan Sentra Owner's Manual here.
This guide is broken down by severity, so we'll start with the red warning lights in every Nissan Sentra.
Nissan Sentra Red Warning Lights
Brake Warning: Parking brake is on, or brake fluid is low. If it stays on after you release the parking brake, check fluid and get service immediately.
Charge Warning: Indicates an alternator, belt, or charging system fault. Turn off non-essential accessories and head straight to service.
Electronic Parking Brake Indicator: Confirms the EPB is applied. It should go out when released. If it stays on, have it serviced.
Engine Oil Pressure: This is not an oil-level gauge — it means oil pressure has dropped. Pull over and shut the engine off immediately.
Master Warning: A critical message is waiting in your vehicle info display — things like a door open while moving, parking brake not released, or a steering alert. Check the screen and act on what it says.
Seat Belt: Buckle up. Everyone in the vehicle, every trip.
Security Indicator: Blinks when the ignition is in the OFF/LOCK/AUTO ACC position to show the immobilizer is armed. Normal behavior.
Airbag Warning Light: If this stays on or flashes while driving, there may be a fault in the airbag or seatbelt pretensioner system. Schedule service as soon as possible.
Nissan Sentra Yellow Warning Lights
Anti-lock Brake System: An ABS fault is detected. You can still brake normally, but the anti-lock assist won't function. Get it checked.
Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB): The system is off or temporarily unavailable. Clean the front sensors and windshield, or re-enable it through your settings.
Front Passenger Air Bag Status ("PASS AIRBAG OFF"): The passenger airbag is deactivated based on seat occupancy or weight. Normal in some seating situations — check your manual if unexpected.
Low Tire Pressure (TPMS): Inflate all four tires to the spec on your door jamb sticker, then drive above 16 mph so the light resets. If it flashes and then stays solid, that's a TPMS sensor fault, not just low pressure.
Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL / check engine): An emissions or engine issue has been detected. A loose or missing fuel cap can also trigger this. Steady light = schedule service soon. Blinking light = active misfire — reduce speed and load, and get service now.
Master Warning (yellow): Triggers for things like no key detected, low washer fluid, door or trunk ajar, loose fuel cap, or low tire pressure. Your Sentra's info display will tell you which one.
Power Steering: Electric power steering issue. Your steering will feel heavier than normal. Service soon.
Rear Automatic Braking (RAB): System is off or unavailable. Check for obstructions near the rear sensors.
Traction Control / VDC Off: Vehicle Dynamic Control has been manually turned off or temporarily disabled. If it comes on without you touching the button, the system may have a fault.
Slip Indicator (car with wavy lines): Traction control is actively working. Brief flashing during slippery conditions is normal. If it stays on steady, there may be a sensor or system fault.
Nissan Sentra Green & Blue Indicator Lights
These lights aren't warnings — they tell you a system is active or engaged.
High Beam Indicator (blue): High beams are on.
Turn Signal Indicators (green arrows): Left or right turn signal is active. Rapid blinking usually means a bulb is out.
The arrows flash together when you turn on your Nissan’s hazard lights, also called emergency flashers, to warn other drivers that you are stopped or moving very slowly and are a potential hazard.
Note: If you’re caught in a dust storm, turn off your hazards once you’re safely off the road. While flashers are meant to warn drivers of potential danger, the low visibility during a monsoon dust storm changes the situation drastically. Other drivers might not realize you’re stopped and try to follow you. They could drive right into the back of your Nissan. Also, the glare of the lights could make visibility worse for other drivers. If you have to pull over during a storm, you’ll want to pull as far off the road as you can, stop and set the parking brake, and then turn off all of your Nissan’s lights. Make sure to take your foot off the brake while you wait for the storm to pass. It’s usually not too long.
